NSP first in NZ with Palo Alto Firewall Certification
Leaders in IT security
NSP is proud to work with the best vendors to meet customer needs. With the increase in security threats caused by ransomware like Cryptolocker infecting server and desktop infrastructure and showing no signs of slowing down, it is important to clients that the firewall defence used provides the highest level of protection. For firewall security the Palo Alto suite of products has been identified by NSP as offering the most complete protection against the current number one threat to IT security. Where other firewall protection may detect the application itself, the Palo Alto products detect the command and control stream leaving the network. They then block the traffic to stop the encryption process. The Palo Alto product also offers security against viruses, malware, Trojans and general hidden traffic streams.
New Zealand’s first fully certified Palo Alto Networks Partner
NSP’s Senior Network and Security Engineer Brent Addis, is the first New Zealand Palo Alto partner to receive the Palo Alto Networks Jacket for completing all five exams of the Partner Certification Security exams. NSP is committed to client security, assisting clients to define their “Security Posture”, working with them to develop their Cyber security strategy and ambition including education at an executive and user level. This investment in developing their knowledge and a capability significantly reduced the impact and risk to a customer’s business from a serious Cryptolocker infection.
Case study: Using Palo Alto to protect against a CryptoLocker Infection
Recently a long term client of NSP’s found out how Palo Alto’s best‐in‐market firewall protection would save valuable company financial data as well as time and money. Unfortunately they made this discovery as their legacy firewall had not protected their business from a new variant of CryptoLocker.
The client initially discovered that they had a CryptoLocker infection which encrypted their files late one Sunday night and was created by a simple visit to a legitimate bank’s website. Immediately the NSP team turned off the customer’s server, directly stopping the encryption process. We then re‐routed the client’s traffic via the NSP Cloud Palo Alto which detected the control and command traffic utilised by Cryptolocker to encrypt the files.
This also enable us to identify three previous infections that had been hibernating within the clients network, assisting us to quickly pin point the source of the infection, and remediate the infection. We also notified the bank, assisting their security staff to cleanse their website of the infection.
The client has now requested that all of their traffic is routed via the NSP Cloud Palo Alto.
Brent Addis, NSP Engineer explains how adding the Palo Alto protection was then critical for the client’s business, “Importantly NSP added extra Palo Alto protection over the client’s network overnight, stopping the encryption process and resulting in the detection of further command and control from that network being blocked. Without the latest firewall protection, the client would have faced ongoing re‐encryption of the data disabling their business until it was isolated.”
The client has full peace of mind that their IT service provider is responsive and up to date with the latest technologies in IT security. “The NSP team pulled out all stops at 6pm on a Sunday night to keep our business operational. Having worked with them for years, we knew they provide the best products for our business, and in this instance, they have saved us potentially thousands of dollars.”
