Hacking is the art of gaining unauthorised access to/or control over a computer network security system, through loopholes and weaknesses for personal gain. The NZ Treasury this week fell prey to a network compromise. But were they hacked? Were they a victim of their own lack of best practice? Or, was it a combination of both?
Either way, it’s clear that human error is a major contributor to a successful hacking attempt.
You’ve seen it before, processes are in place, but employees fail to adhere to or worse still blatantly bypass those processes. Usually it’s because they simply don’t understand that they are more important than they think. As technology advances, so must an employee’s understanding of the part they play.
